Our position

Designed to complement good coaching—not replace it.

Canter Critic provides another perspective on your riding footage, helping you notice patterns and prepare more useful conversations with your instructor.

The process

Three steps, from the arena to a useful review.

  1. Footage01

    Record your ride

Place your phone at the side of the arena and record a clear view of you and your horse.

  2. Selection02

    Upload your footage

Choose the section you would like Canter Critic to review.

  3. Review03

    Review useful observations

See selected moments, movement patterns and practical points to consider on your next ride.

What it reviews

More than a rider score.

Riding is a partnership. Canter Critic is being designed to consider the rider, the horse and the movement between them.

The rider

How you sit, and how steady you stay through the work.

  • Position and alignment
  • Upper-body stability
  • Lower-leg movement
  • Balance and symmetry
  • Timing through the stride

The horse

How your horse moves, and how that changes through a session.

  • Rhythm and stride consistency
  • Head and neck movement
  • Visible movement patterns
  • Transitions between gaits
  • Differences between reins

The partnership

What happens between the two of you, which is easy to miss from the saddle.

  • Horse-and-rider timing
  • Movement relative to one another
  • Hand movement in relation to the horse
  • Changes through a session
  • Patterns that appear on one rein

These are the areas Canter Critic is being built to review. They describe the intended scope of the product rather than features available today.

00:1400:31
00:14What looked good
Your upper body remained quiet and consistent through this section of canter.
00:26What the Critic noticed
Your lower leg moved further back during the final third of the clip, particularly as the canter became stronger.
00:31Something to consider
Review whether fatigue or tension may be affecting your leg position as the session progresses.

Observations are presented with the confidence the footage supports.

Our approach

Built for useful feedback, not empty scores.

Clear observations
Canter Critic should explain what it has noticed and show the relevant moment.
Constructive by design
Reviews should recognise what went well as well as what may be worth revisiting.
Honest about limitations
Video analysis has limits. Observations should be presented with appropriate context and confidence.
Coaching still matters
Canter Critic is an additional perspective, not a substitute for an experienced instructor, vet or other qualified professional.
Who it is for

For riders who want to notice more.

  • Riders who already film their training sessions and want more from the footage.
  • Riders working towards more consistent, more accurate flatwork.
  • Instructors looking for a clearer way to review a lesson afterwards.
  • Owners who want to track how things change over a season.

Questions

Before you sign up.

Is Canter Critic available yet?
Not yet. It is still in development. We’ll offer early access gradually so we can work closely with the first riders who use it.
Will it analyse both horse and rider?
That’s the intention. Canter Critic is being designed to review the rider, the horse and the movement between them, rather than scoring the rider alone.
Does it replace an instructor?
No. It is intended as an additional perspective and a review tool. It should make the conversation with your instructor more useful, not replace it.
Can it diagnose lameness?
No. Canter Critic is not a veterinary diagnostic tool and must not be used as one. If you have any concern about your horse’s soundness, speak to your vet.
What kind of footage will it need?
Initially, clear landscape footage filmed from the side of the arena, with the whole horse and rider visible throughout.
Will my videos be used for training?
You will be given a clear, separate choice. Processing your footage to produce the review you asked for is one thing; allowing selected footage to help improve the product is another, and the two will never be bundled together. Final wording will be published before launch.
